We conduct our missionary ministry at the UCU Collegium – Sister Teodora Shulak, new Superior General of the Redemptorist Sisters

A Ukrainian nun of the UGCC, Sister Teodora Shulak, has been elected Superior General of the Missionary Sisters of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorist Sisters), who serve from South America to Japan. Sister Shulak is a graduate of UCU and also teaches at our university.

Sister Teodora Shulak

In 2007, Sr. Shulak finished her studies at the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy of Ukrainian Catholic University and received a master’s degree in theology. Sr. Shulak now teaches Christian Spirituality at the Department of Psychology and Psychotherapy at the UCU Faculty of Health Sciences.

In an interview for Zhyve Telebachennya [Live TV], she spoke of her plans to develop the congregation, the activities of the Redemptorist Sisters in Ukraine, and also about the community of sisters that functions at the Collegium of Ukrainian Catholic University.

The Congregation of Redemptorist Sisters was founded in Germany in 1957. “The main mission of the Redemptorists is to bring the good news of Christ’s redemption, the love of God, to those places where no one has been. The sisters now serve in Bolivia, Japan. We carry out our mission in various ways and are always oriented to people’s needs,” said Sr. Teodora Shulak.

The Redemptorist Sisters have a provincial and formational house in Lviv and also serve at the UCU Collegium, where they have a small community: “This is one of our missionary ministries. We have an opportunity to witness Christian spiritual life among young people. Students from all over Ukraine live at the Collegium, and here we feel like missionaries to all of Ukraine.”

Sr. Shulak says that it is very interesting to interact with all the students that come to UCU. “Something draws them to this university. Though some declare that they themselves are agnostics, they are searching. Our dialogue even allows me to grow in my faith. I also see our missionary character in this,” explained Sr. Teodora.

We add that for many years Sr. Shulak was Provincial Superior of the Congregation of Redemptorist Sisters in Ukraine. In 1997, at the age of 16, she became one of the initiators of the founding of the first community of Redemptorist Sisters in the UGCC.

It’s the formational program that distinguishes the UCU Collegium from other student residences, not only in Ukraine but in the world. “This is a unique offering addressed to especially active students, who have the opportunity to develop their spirituality, personal qualities, and social skills through participating in the life of a community which unites students, professors, religious, and people with special needs,” explained Fr. Yuriy Kozlovskyi, Master of the Collegium.

In Fr. Kozlovskyi’s words, the main task of the formational program is to teach students how to serve: “In order to serve, one must understand and recognize the dignity of those whom you serve. You need to love and respect those people. Also, let us be grateful to all who now serve us in the trenches and confirm our dignity.”
